Cold Storage Engineering for Archives
Cold storage holds data that is rarely accessed but must survive for years or decades. The engineering challenge is not throughput but durability, cost, and retrievability: cheap media, erasure coding, lifecycle policies, and tested restores. The common failure is optimizing for storage cost while forgetting that archived data must still be readable on demand, sometimes urgently.

Cloud archive: minutes to hours depending on tier. Tape: hours to days including physical handling. Plan RTO around this.
Should I compress before archiving?
Yes for text and repetitive data; no for already-compressed media. Test compression ratios and restore speed per data type.
