Field notes

The update problem is economic, not technical: site owners postpone updates because breakage costs more than the abstract risk of hacking, until the hack arrives. Staged updates with snapshots and canary sites flip that math by making updates boring, which is why managed update waves outperform every reminder email ever sent.

WordPress security plugins are frequently misconfigured in the same three ways: firewall left in learning mode forever, live-traffic logging at full verbosity on busy sites, and admin alerts routed to unmonitored mailboxes. Correcting those three settings does more than most premium upgrades.

Nulled premium themes and plugins remain the single most efficient malware delivery channel we encounter. Beyond the ethics, the economics fail: the license cost is trivial next to one cleanup, one blacklist episode, or one lost checkout weekend.
