Field notes

Measure in this order and you will rarely be wrong: server response time first (TTFB), then database query profile, then caching hit ratios, then front-end assets. Most 'slow website' engagements die at step one or two, a 2.5-second TTFB that no image optimization can fix, or three queries consuming 80% of request time.

MySQL deserves special emphasis because it hides: CPUs idle while queries queue, so the server 'looks fine' while visitors wait. Slow-query logging with pt-query-digest aggregation turns that invisibility into a ranked list, and the top five queries usually explain the majority of pain. Index design, composite, leftmost-prefix-aware, pruned quarterly, is the highest-value database work that exists.

Caching fails in predictable ways worth memorizing: low hit ratios from misconfigured exclusions, thundering herds after full purges, and personalized content served from shared cache. Each has a boring, reliable fix, surgical purge rules, private-cache discipline, and hit-ratio dashboards that catch misconfiguration within hours.
