Field notes
Alert fatigue is a monitoring system failing at its only job. The fix is unglamorous: severity tiers with different channels, per-server thresholds learned from baselines rather than copied from defaults, and a monthly tuning pass that retires noisy checks. Pages should mean 'act now' every single time.
Monitor functionally, not just positively: an HTTP 200 with a database-error page is an outage your uptime check just certified as healthy. Keyword assertions, transaction checks on login and checkout, and content-aware probes are the difference between monitoring and monitoring theater.
The two cheapest high-value monitors remain expiry watches: SSL certificates and domains. Both cause fully avoidable, fully embarrassing outages with depressing regularity, and both are solved by external checks with escalating 30/14/7-day alerts plus automation as the primary path.
