IoT & Smart Device Security
IoT Network Segmentation
Segmentation is the control that would have contained nearly every major IoT incident: Mirai cameras couldn't have reached Dyn targets from isolated VLANs, and fridge controllers couldn't have been driven from the open internet. Proper IoT segmentation puts every device class on its own isolated network with explicit, minimal allowed paths.
Key points
- Place IoT devices on dedicated VLANs with no route to workstations, servers, or the internet.
- Allow only explicit required paths (e.g., NVR recording port) through the firewall.
- Block all outbound initiation from IoT VLANs, devices answer, never call out.
- Use private VLANs or client isolation so compromised devices can't see peers.
- Filter management access to jump hosts or VPN with allowlisted sources.
- Log and alert on any denied cross-VLAN attempt, it's either misconfiguration or attack.
- Review rules quarterly; firewall exceptions accumulate like dust.
- Extend segmentation to guest, contractor, and vendor-maintenance access paths.
Field note
Map what talks to what before segmenting; the exposure map usually scares leadership into funding the fix. Design is the work, VLANs themselves are the easy part.
Frequently asked questions
Is segmentation hard?
Design takes thought; implementation is standard VLAN and firewall work, far cheaper than one incident.
Won't it break remote management?
No, VPN and jump-host paths preserve legitimate access while removing internet exposure.
What about wireless IoT?
Separate SSIDs mapped to the same isolated VLANs, with client isolation enabled.
How do we start?
An exposure audit first: what talks to what today. The map usually scares leadership into funding the fix.
How Kinetikatech helps with iot & smart device security
This is what we do every day: Fridges, cameras, controllers, and building systems were never designed for the hostile internet, we secure them anyway. Our 24/7 Server Monitoring and Server Management service covers it end to end, assessment, implementation, 24/7 monitoring, and emergency response within 30 minutes.
